ABI’s (Ankle-Brachial Index)

The ankle-brachial index (ABI) is a quick, non-invasive test that compares the blood pressure in your ankles to the pressure in your arms. This helps detect peripheral arterial disease (PAD) — a condition where narrowed arteries reduce blood flow to the limbs, often causing leg pain, cramping, or fatigue during walking (known as claudication).

ABI testing is especially useful in diagnosing early or hidden vascular disease in patients with symptoms like:

  • Leg discomfort during exercise
  • Cold or discolored feet
  • Non-healing leg wounds
  • A history of smoking or diabetes

This test helps determine your risk of heart attack or stroke and can guide treatment decisions for improving circulation.
