An ICD is a life-saving device used in patients at risk for sudden cardiac arrest. It monitors heart rhythm continuously and delivers a shock if a dangerous arrhythmia like ventricular fibrillation occurs.
Candidates include:
- History of cardiac arrest or sustained ventricular tachycardia
- Weak heart muscle (low ejection fraction)
- Certain inherited arrhythmia conditions
ICDs help prevent sudden death and are usually implanted under the skin near the collarbone.
