An aortic ultrasound is a fast, non-invasive test that uses sound waves to examine the abdominal aorta, the major artery that carries blood from the heart to the lower body. It is primarily used to screen for an abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA)—a potentially life-threatening enlargement of the aorta.
Screening is especially important for:
- Men over age 65
- Individuals with a smoking history
- People with a family history of aneurysms
Early detection of an AAA can prevent rupture and allow for timely intervention, often saving lives.
